Oncology Diet & Nutrition

Oncology nutrition involves the consumption of balanced diet that could include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to support the immune system and manage side effects, while being hydrated is also vital.

However, in many cases of cancer, a phenomenon called the Warburg effect is observed, wherein the cancer cells convert glucose to lactate even when oxygen is present. This helps in the rapid growth and can lead to the survival of the cancer cells and resistance to treatment.

Thus, based on the evaluation it is important to work on a personalized diet plan, called Ketogenic diet, which is high in fat, low in carbohydrates, and adequate in protein and involves restricting carbohydrates to reduce blood glucose, which may slow down tumor growth by depriving cancer cells of their primary fuel source.

Examples of Ketogenic diet Are:

⇒High-fat foods: Avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish.

⇒Adequate protein: Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, and legumes.

⇒Low-carbohydrate vegetables: Leafy greens, cauliflower, broccoli, and other non-starchy vegetables.

⇒Healthy fats: Found in olive oil, nuts, and avocados.

Other benefits of Ketogenic diet are improved blood sugar control, and better heart health markers
