Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure where a long, flexible tube with a camera, is used to examine the rectum and large intestine (colon). The procedure requires a special diet and a clean colon in the days leading up to colonoscopy.

Primary objectives of colonoscopy are:

Screening and diagnosis:To verify and confirm signs of disease, such as polyps (which can be cancerous), cancer, or ulcers, in the colon and rectum.

⇒Treatment:To remove polyps or take biopsies of abnormal tissue, and to stop active bleeding.

⇒Monitoring:To monitor conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.

Aspects of colonoscopy:

The Patients may go home after the procedure, however since this done under sedation, may need to be driven home by someone.

The procedure may lead to Bloating, gas, and abdominal cramping, however should resolve within a day or two.

A return to normal diet usually takes a short time, but some temporary bowel movement changes are normal.
