Lymphedema management

Lymphedema management includes a multi-dimensional approach that includes complete decongestive therapy (CDT) and lifestyle adjustments.

Complete decongestive therapy includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging or garments, exercise, and skin care. Lifestyle adjustments focus on skin protection, healthy weight, staying hydrated, and adopting a low-salt diet.

Medical and therapeutic treatments:

⇒Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized massage from a therapist to stimulate lymph flow and help to reduce swelling.

⇒Compression therapy: After MLD, bandages or garments are used to reduce and also contain swelling.

⇒Exercise: Regular exercise can improve lymph fluid flow, but it’s best to consult with a doctor or physical therapist first.

⇒Pneumatic compression devices: A machine that uses an inflatable sleeve to apply pressure to the affected area.

⇒Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): A light-based treatment that can be used in combination with other therapies to help manage lymphedema.

⇒Surgery:  In some cases, surgical options may be considered for patients who don’t respond to conservative management.
