Mammography
Mammography is an X-ray imaging technique that is used to examine breast tissue for the early detection of breast cancer. It is done by taking images of the breast, which can be on film or digital. The procedure uses low-dose X-rays and is a key screening tool for detecting cancers when they are too small to be felt.
The purpose is to find early signs of breast cancer, such as masses or microcalcifications, thereby improves the chances of a successful treatment. It is used for both screening in cases without symptoms and diagnostic purposes (in cases of symptoms.)
Types of mammograms:
⇒Conventional film mammography: Uses X-rays to produce an image on film.
⇒Digital mammography (DM): Captures the image on a computer, allowing for adjustments to improve contrast and view the image on a monitor. Digital mammograms have been shown to detect more cancers in younger women and those with dense breasts.
⇒Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT): A 3D mammogram that takes a series of pictures from different angles and 3D images are created using a computer.
